March 17, 2024 marked fifteen years since The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World’s Greatest Encyclopedia hit bookstore shelves. Launched at SXSW 2009, the book captured Wikipedia’s first seven years — a scrappy, improbable project that somehow became the world’s #8 website.
A lot has changed. Here’s what I’ve learned.
The Thesis Held
When I wrote that “Wikipedia became an instant phenomenon because of both supply and demand,” I didn’t know if the model would hold. It did — and then some.
The supply side grew beyond what anyone imagined. What started as a few thousand contributors became a global movement spanning 300+ languages, Wikidata (the free knowledge graph with 100 million+ concepts), Wikimedia Commons (100+ million media files), and an ecosystem of GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) partnerships.
The demand side exploded too. Wikipedia went from the #8 website to the #5 most-visited site on Earth. It’s the default reference layer for every AI model, voice assistant, and search engine.
The New Frontier: Structured Data
The biggest change since 2009? Wikipedia is no longer just text.
Wikidata, launched in 2012, transformed how knowledge is structured. Instead of articles about Versailles saying “Built in 1682” in English, French, and German separately, Wikidata stores it once: inception: 1682. Every language Wikipedia can pull that fact automatically.
This matters enormously for GLAM institutions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 470,000+ artworks now exist as Wikidata items with machine-readable metadata. When you ask Siri “What’s at the Met?”, the answer comes from this structured data.
AI Changes Everything — And Nothing
The rise of large language models has created a fascinating dynamic. AI companies train on Wikipedia and Wikidata because they’re the largest high-quality, freely-licensed knowledge bases in existence. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — they all depend on our work.
But AI generation also creates new challenges. When anyone can generate plausible-sounding text, the value of verifiable human knowledge increases. Wikipedia’s core principles — neutral point of view, reliable sources, verifiability — become more important, not less.
The Pioneer’s Reflection
In 2003, I became the first university professor to teach with Wikipedia in a classroom. CNN aired the first English-language television story about Wikipedia featuring my students at the University of Hong Kong. It felt radical.
Today, Wikipedia-based education is mainstream. The Wiki Education Foundation has supported 100,000+ students contributing 80 million words to Wikipedia. What was an experiment is now a pillar of digital literacy.
What’s Next
The next frontier is at the intersection of AI and human curation — exactly the kind of work I’ve been doing at The Met, the Smithsonian, and MIT Open Learning. Machine learning can surface patterns in millions of artworks. But human judgment decides what matters and what’s true.
That’s been the Wikipedia story from day one. The tools change. The principle doesn’t.
